Sometimes, you don’t know what you want until you see it — like the Frosted Gold series of the iconic Audemars Piguet Royal Oak model. The new Frosted Gold iterations, available in white gold and pink gold, were created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first ladies’ Royal Oak model. The beauty of a timepiece that’s sporty and cool, yet glamorous at the same time, gets a new shine, literally. Audemars Piguet sought the talents of Florentine jeweller Carolina Bucci, known for her bold pieces, who shared her characteristic technique on the the anniversary watches. Essentially, this technique, which uses a diamond-tipped tool, has its roots in an ancient hammering technique that creates tiny facets that leave a shimmering sparkle on metal surfaces that it’s applied to. The technique, applied to the surface of the entire watch, left very few areas — the caseback, the edge of the bezel, the bevelled edges of the bracelet links, the underside of the bracelet and the logo on the clasp — with smooth, polished surfaces. It’s a careful balancing act that makes the frosted surfaces pop, as seen in the white gold version (pictured), which could easily be mistaken, from afar, for a timepiece with fine pave-set diamonds.
