A blast from the past: In the ’70s, Yves Saint Laurent famously threw a grand party for the launch of his Opium fragrance on a ship docked at New York City’s Street Seaport. For his menswear debut, creative director Anthony Vaccarello revisited the lavishness in the form of a marble-tiled runway set by the Hudson River in New Jersey’s Liberty State Park.
Vaccarello’s study of the ’70s referenced New York’s decadents of that era — from Lou Reed to the Studio 54 frequenters — resulting in ultra-glam outerwear and boot-cut trousers slightly flared at the hem.
Pin-thin rockstar silhouettes, not dissimilar to that of Hedi Slimane’s mould, were polished with added silkiness and sparkle.
The pairing of wide-brim hats and dishevelled mane made recurring appearances.
Gilded gold textures accentuated the collection’s dark palette.
Leather jackets came reinvented with ’70s Americana detailing.
A handful of female models, the likes of Kaia Gerber and Adut Akech, walked the show in the slick androgynous silhouettes.
The final Saint Laurent boys emerged with silver glitter-smudged faces and torsos.
