This season’s London Fashion Week could be the last for the country as a member of the European Union. Yet the runway shows’ decadence — flouncy puffs of tulle at Molly Goddard, a pearl-festooned take on Irish folklore at Simone Rocha, grandiose shearling and tartan at Burberry — surprisingly paid little to no attention to the political turmoil. Brexit was, decidedly, old news.
Likewise, an escapist outlook lingered, too, on the streets. Outside the show venues, showgoers arrived and sashayed in a spectrum of bright optimistic colours and playful silhouettes; some left room for irony and humour (case in point: the ultra-tiny Jacquemus bags and pouches made quite a number of appearances).
