Gold is a colour that is flattering on a multitude of skin tones. Whether it is in a pale shade of yellow gold or a warmer rose gold tone, this is a colour that can instantly illuminate the complexion and lightly sculpt the face. It’s no wonder that gold highlighter has become a popular product no longer relinquished to the bottom of our makeup kits.

Today, brands offer seasonal highlighters — many in beautiful, limited edition packaging — that can be used on nearly any part of the face to add lustre to the skin. Swept on the temples, nose bridge and upper cheekbones, gold can highlight points of the face you want to draw attention to, while on the eyes it can double up as a light sweep of eyeshadow. Best suited for after dark, there’s a certain undeniable glamour to the hue.

For the holiday season, Chanel has a limited edition illuminating powder called the Éclat Magnétique De Chanel. Beauty collectors will adore the beautiful, embossed design of the highlighter that takes its cue from a vintage Chanel button and bears some of the house’s signatures like braiding and the double C logo. In the shade Metal Peach, which can best be described as a satiny, peach gold tone, the pearlescent powder can be used to lightly sculpt the face and bring on a radiant effect. “The highlighter brings light sculpting to the face with a soft shine,” says Lucia Pica, the brand’s global creative makeup and colour designer. Pica also recommends using this before applying eyeshadow to add a touch of light to the eyes.

For luxury French perfume and cosmetics house Guerlain, the brand’s emblematic Terracotta powder is traditionally a bronzer. For the holiday season, it takes on a gilded edge. Perfect for creating a sun-kissed glow, this sunny highlighter can be used on specific points of the face for a controlled gleam, or swept all-over for a more dramatic effect. After you’re done with the product the gem-inspired case doubles up as a jewellery box — a sustainable effort that we can appreciate.

Chantecaille Éclat Brilliant is a radiant highlighter that imbues skin with a very subtle dose of golden shimmer. Perfect for those who want a more elegant take on a golden highlighter, this goes smoothly on the skin and doesn’t have large chunks of glitter. And if you hanker after pretty packaging, the gold foil effect on the case makes this an enticing addition to your vanity table.

Finally, if you would prefer to customise the shimmer and colour then a highlighter palette is a good option. M.A.C’s Star-Dipped Face Compact in Medium Deep combines four shades —including a Skin Finish in metallic gold and a gold-flecked bronzer — to create the exact look that you desire. All four colours and finishes are complementary so you can use them together or individually to add gentle sculpting, colour and illumination on the face.
