In 1968, American designer Bonnie Cashin was awarded American Handbag Designer of the Year by the Leather Industries of America for her work at Coach. In 2017, British designer Stuart Vevers, was named Accessory Designer of the Year after four years at the helm of Coach. While the two share a knack for imbuing a sense of desirability into carryalls, Cashin’s prowess was in conceiving iconic shapes and Vevers’s, repositioning the traditional with a contemporary appeal. The heritage American brand’s latest boxy cross-body, dubbed the Mailbox, is a marriage of an archival shape revivified with lauded artist Keith Haring’s graphic lines. The silhouette of the bag, literally takes inspiration from the mailboxes that Cashin was enamoured by on her weekend trips to the countryside. Reinvented by Vevers, the Mailbox’s latest Spring ’18 reissuing is crafted with two external pockets on either end. Its signature kiss-lock closure opens up to reveal an exclusive printed lining that combines Haring’s graphic art and florals featured in the collection.
