A Bag That Maximises on Minimalism’s Timelessness

By Joe Tan

Saint Laurent Carré Satchel in Box Saint Laurent Leather

Saint Laurent’s latest offering by Anthony Vaccarello — the Carré Satchel — follows the ethos of pure necessity as dictated by functional elegance. Gone is the interlacing YSL monogram hardware found on some of the French luxury label’s most familiar favourites and in its place, a minimalist square magnetic clasp discreetly engraved with the maison’s eponymous name. And if the bag’s silhouette appears familiar, that's simply because it’s an elevated rendition of its predecessor from Saint Laurent’s Pre-Fall ’19 collection: It comes with an adjustable and shortened handle strap, as well as a lighter overall composition for comfortable wearing.

Made in its entirety in smooth calfskin leather, the Carré comes reasonably sized to house the daily essentials of a sophisticate within its clean lines. Free of unnecessary ornamentation, the bag is instead furnished with specialised leather artisanship techniques and reinforced padding, ensuring that its considered shape withstands the wear and tear from frequent use. And if one needs further convincing, the simplicity of the bag’s design just exudes undeniable timelessness, which harkens back to the style of someone who always seems to be in-the-know. So, if an investment piece that stands the test of time is what you are looking for, the Carré Satchel makes for an excellent choice.
